Terror Action Averted in Denmark

Posted by Exile on September 4, 2007

Denmarks Police Intelligence service (PET) has carried out a series of arrests in the area of Copenhagen. Eight have been arrested in a counter terrorist operation which apparently has its roots in Al-Queda. The action started at around 02:00 monday morning and is probably still continuing as I write this.

In all, eleven different adresses were visited and all arrests were made as a part of a long surveillance operation. The parties involved were described as (surprise – surprise) “militant islamists with international connections, including Al-Queda.”
All those arrested are between nineteen and twenty nine years of age, two are “Danish” citiziens, the rest being “foreigners”, two of those with residence permits. Details are a bit sparse, there are no names mentioned, but nationalities are Afghani, Pakistani, Somalian and Turkish.
PET has recovered materials used in the production of explosives. According to PET boss, Jacob Scharf, the suspects were in the process of making explosives for use in terrorist actions and that such an action has now been stopped. It is believed that these people had produced a very unstable explosive and that it was necessary to stop them now because of the risk of this unstable material exploding “prematurely” in the housing complex where it was being made.
Details are being kept under wraps for the time being, mainly because of the continuing ivestigation. The raids were carried out in the following areas of Copenhagen:
Vanløse, Amager, Albertslund, Hvidovre, Ishøj, Nørrebro and in the North West quarter of the city.

The above information was gleaned from early TV reports and the Jyllands Posten.

Here is the BBC take on the story

  1. They have just arrested two in Germany who were planing an attack I just wonder if these are connected and these thugs were planing some firework demonstration to celebrate sept 11th it seems too much of a coincidence for my liking. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get some sort of attack either here in Europe or America around that time.
